One for the Books
Joe Queenan is a motormouth New Yorker with opinions on everything under the sun and who writes like an absolute dream. This book about all the books he owns and has read, and the books he won’t read or has stopped reading, or that have led him to weird and strange encounters is by turns funny, unputdownable and deadly serious.
His narrative barrels along. You can’t turn the pages fast enough. One moment you’re laughing, the next you’re infuriated that he’s just insulted one of your favourite writers. But you can’t stop reading. There’s always another maddening/hilarious/touching observation waiting for you on the next page.
This is a love song to books, and its passion will have you running to your nearest book shop with a (large) shopping bag in one hand and your wallet or purse in the other.
A reader's delight.
